BMCC ASAP combines transit and textbook help with sustained advising. Its eligibility rules matter as much as the benefits.
BMCC ASAP lists a free unlimited-ride OMNY card, textbook assistance and a tuition-and-fee gap award for eligible students on its program page as of October 10, 2026. It is a package of academic support, not an automatic grant for everyone enrolled at the college.
The distinction matters when comparing the cost of community college. Tuition is one line in a student’s budget; reaching class and obtaining course materials are others. Borough of Manhattan Community College’s published ASAP information puts those needs beside a dedicated advisor, career services and classes with other participants. The college presents the program around a commitment to completing an associate degree within three years or less.
This is an evergreen guide to the published program, not an announcement of a new award or a finding that any particular applicant qualifies. BMCC determines admission and benefits. Students should not subtract a promised award from their budget until they know what the college has approved for them.
BMCC ASAP starts with eligibility
The college’s current list says applicants must receive the in-city tuition rate, be in good academic standing and not be enrolled in another academic success program. Transfer and continuing students must have no more than 21 earned credits. Those are separate conditions, not alternatives from which a student can choose.
The approved-major rule also needs attention. BMCC says it accepts all majors except Nursing/Undeclared Health, EMT or RTT, and excludes anyone taking nursing prerequisite courses. A student considering a change of major should therefore ask the program about that specific plan, rather than assuming eligibility follows the person regardless of the courses taken.
There is another unusually important line on the page: a qualifying developmental need in mathematics and/or English. The college’s published wording should not be replaced with a broad assumption that every incoming student is eligible. An applicant whose placement record is unclear should take that question directly to ASAP staff.
These are BMCC’s stated conditions. They are not a citywide promise covering every program with the same acronym, and this guide does not establish acceptance for a particular semester. Comparing campuses means comparing their actual entry requirements, not only their benefit lists.
The award is only part of the package
The tuition-and-fee benefit is explicitly described as a gap award for eligible students. That wording is narrower than saying the program pays every student’s entire college bill. The sensible question is what remains on an individual account after the college applies the relevant assistance, and which costs are outside the award.
Textbooks receive assistance, while transportation is described more specifically as a free unlimited-ride OMNY card. Neither description establishes a cash payment that a student can use for anything else. Ask how the benefit is issued, what conditions apply and when it becomes available before relying on it for a purchase.
The dedicated advisor is equally consequential. An advisor can help turn a list of degree requirements into a semester plan, but a plan still has to fit work and family commitments. A useful first meeting would put the intended major, existing credits and realistic study schedule on the same page. That is practical preparation, not a guarantee of a particular graduation date.
Two locations, one need for a clear plan
BMCC says ASAP operates in Tribeca and at its Heights location at 5030 Broadway. It also says students may be assigned an advisor at either location. Proximity to one site therefore should not be treated as confirmation of where every advising appointment will take place.
Students bringing college credits with them can also read our guide to CUNY Transfer Explorer. Transfer-credit planning and ASAP eligibility answer different questions: one concerns how previous coursework may fit, while the other concerns admission to this support program.
The next step is the application route on BMCC’s own ASAP page, accompanied by specific questions about credits, major, placement and the award. The strongest comparison is not the longest benefit list. It is the support a student is actually eligible to receive and can use while completing the degree.
